Evaluation.

- students may miss one class without penalty. 5 point out of 100 will be removed from your final grade per class missed after that.
-The grant panel is mandatory as participation affects not only your own mark but that of your colleagues
- students will be asked to grade the presentations and provide their colleagues with feedback using a marking scheme provided at each class.

• Long presentation 35% on Presentation and 10% as a respondent (30 minute presentation/ 10 min question period)
  Presentation of a paper assigned by one of the lecturing professors. Presentation should be prepared using PowerPoint or other software supported by University of Ottawa Medtech services. A data projector, PC, with Zip and CD drive will be available.
  (half marks from course cooordinators, half marks from colleagues) for presentation
  Respondent will need to provide to the course coordinator on the day of the presentation five typed questions on the paper and drive the discussion for 15 minutes. The mark for the respondent will come from the course coordinator.
  
  Marking scheme for the presentation
  - presentation of background material necessary to understand the hypothesis
  - presentation of introduction, results, methods
  - critical analysis of discussion
  - presentation of controversies inherent in the research
  - ability to promote discussion and questions from student colleague

  Presentation of a paper selected from the litterature relevant to the course. Presentation should be prepared using PowerPoint or other software supported by University of Ottawa Medtech services. A data projector, PC, with Zip and CD drive will be available.

• 30% BCH8110 Perspective Articles
  Marking scheme
  30 marks
  Students are required to write a perspective articles.  A perspective focuses on your vision of the importance of a new direction in protein biochemistry.  To do this, you will need to clearly summarize the research that provides the bases for the new direction, put it in context of other approaches, and discuss the importance of this new development.  Your perspective must be understandable to scientists that do not have the background in the field.  The manuscript must be balanced, and must accurately represent current literature. Your manuscript should not be more than 5000 words, including abstract, text, references, and figures.  50% of the marks will be based on peer review (see review section) and 50% will be based on the review by the course coordinator.

• 10% Review of Perspective Articles
  Marking scheme
  10 marks
  Students will be assigned two perspective articles written by one of their colleagues. Students will write a 2 pg review for each article. These written reports will make up the mark for the Review of Perspective Article (10 marks).  The written reports must include:  A brief summary of the article (one paragraph), list of issues, discussion of the relevance and balance of the article (i.e. why is this important and was it fairly represented), and discussion on the completness of the curent litterature.  The reviewer must assigned to the perspective article a score according to the following rule:
  45 - 50 outstanding
  40 - 44 excellent
  35 - 39 very good
  30 - 34 acceptable, but low priority
  25 - 29 needs revision
  20 - 24 needs major revision
  10 - 19 seriously flawed
  

  The review will be sent to the course coordinator by the assigned date.   The course coordinator will assign a grade to the reviews as well as compile the results from the peer review.
